Project Escher Enters Its Next Major Development Sprint: Building the Action & Combat Prototype

Rare Castle is officially entering the next major stage of development for Off The Grid: Bad Dream (Project Escher).

After completing the first half of the prototype, development is now moving into the next phase: building the game’s action and combat side.

This new sprint marks the 5th major milestone of Project Escher and focuses on turning the previously established adventure foundation into a playable action experience.

The Next Milestone: Action & Combat

The goal of this sprint is straightforward:

Build a playable action/combat prototype.

To achieve that, development will focus on three core systems:

Weapon System

The first focus will be the game’s weapon system, establishing the foundation for how the protagonist interacts with weapons and how combat will function from the player’s perspective.

Combat & Shooting Mechanics

The next step is developing the core shooting and combat mechanics that will define the action gameplay of Project Escher.

This includes building the fundamental gameplay loop around aiming, shooting, combat interaction, and the systems required to make the action feel responsive and engaging.

Enemy System

The final major component of this milestone is the enemy system.

Enemies will provide the foundation for combat encounters, allowing the new shooting mechanics to become part of an actual gameplay experience rather than isolated systems.

From Adventure to Action

The first half of the prototype focused heavily on establishing the game’s adventure and mystery experience.

Now, Project Escher is entering a very different stage.

The challenge is no longer simply proving that the world, atmosphere, exploration, and narrative concepts can work. The next step is proving that the action side of the game can work alongside them.

This makes the upcoming sprint an important moment for the project.

The objective is not to create a finished combat system or a polished final game. The objective is to build a playable combat prototype that demonstrates how the action side of Project Escher can function as part of the larger experience.

A New Chapter of Development

This milestone also marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Rare Castle development journey.

From this point forward, the development process will be documented as the project continues to evolve, sharing the challenges, experiments, breakthroughs, and failures involved in building the second half of the prototype.

There is still a long road ahead, but the direction is now clear:

Project Escher is moving from proving its adventure foundation to proving its action foundation.

The next milestone begins now.
